Initial queries and communication with Caitriona via WhatsApp was swift and professional, answering all questions and providing images/videos on request. They had the stock we needed and were willing to install as soon as they could. Delivered and planted Portuguese Laurel hedging at our home today. Quality of product looks excellent, planting very neat, and our driveway was left as clean as they found it. Niall and his colleague also helped treat existing damaged box plants in our driveway. After they left, they also provided advice/feedback via WhatsApp on caring for all the hedging in coming weeks. Excellent service from start to finish. Would absolutely recommend Cullen Nurseries. Excellent advice, communication and service, and most importantly, excellent follow-up service. I bought 12 large root ball deciduous trees from Caitriona last year. Some of them unfortunately died and this year she replaced them at a very good discounted price.

Description

Portuguese Laurel Hedging Plants

Portuguese Laurel (Prunus lusitanica) is an attractive evergreen hedging plant with smaller, darker green leaves than traditional Cherry Laurel. Its neat growth and elegant appearance make it particularly popular for formal gardens, boundaries, privacy and year-round screening.

Hardy and versatile, Portuguese Laurel grows well in Irish conditions and responds extremely well to pruning. It can be maintained as a tidy formal hedge or allowed to develop into a taller evergreen screen.

Portuguese Laurel at a Glance

  • Foliage: Glossy dark green leaves on attractive reddish stems
  • Position: Full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: Suitable for most reasonably well-drained soils
  • Spacing: Approximately 3 plants per metre for a dense hedge

  • Evergreen: Yes

Why Choose Portuguese Laurel?

Portuguese Laurel is an excellent choice if you want the year-round screening of Laurel but prefer a smaller leaf and more refined appearance.

The dark evergreen foliage contrasts with its reddish young stems, creating an attractive hedge throughout the year. Established plants can also produce small white flowers followed by dark berries.

Portuguese Laurel responds very well to trimming, making it particularly suitable for creating a dense, structured hedge.

Where to Plant Portuguese Laurel

Portuguese Laurel performs well in a range of garden conditions and can be planted in full sun or partial shade. It prefers reasonably fertile, well-drained soil but is adaptable once established.

Good ground preparation is particularly important when establishing a new hedge. Remove competing grass and weeds from the planting area and improve poor soil where necessary before planting.

When to Plant Portuguese Laurel

Potted Portuguese Laurel can be planted throughout the year when soil and weather conditions are suitable. Avoid planting into frozen, waterlogged or exceptionally dry ground.

Water thoroughly after planting and pay particular attention to watering during dry periods in the first growing season while the root system becomes established.

How Far Apart Should Portuguese Laurel Be Planted?

For a dense Portuguese Laurel hedge, we recommend planting approximately 3 plants per metre.

The exact spacing can vary depending on the size of the plants being used and how quickly you want the hedge to fill out. Larger, more mature Portuguese Laurel plants may be planted at wider intervals than smaller young hedging plants.

Pruning and Aftercare

Portuguese Laurel responds well to regular pruning. Trimming young plants encourages branching and helps the hedge develop dense growth from an early stage.

Once the hedge reaches the required size, regular trimming can be used to maintain its height, width and shape.

Keep the area immediately around newly planted hedging free from grass and weeds, and water when necessary during dry weather.

Before pruning an established hedge, always check carefully for active bird nests.

Portuguese Laurel vs Cherry Laurel

Both Portuguese Laurel and Cherry Laurel are excellent evergreen hedging plants, but they have noticeably different appearances and growth habits.

Cherry Laurel Rotundifolia has larger leaves and faster, broader growth, making it particularly useful where rapid screening is the priority.

Portuguese Laurel has smaller dark green leaves and a neater appearance, making it especially attractive for formal hedging.

For narrower spaces, Genolia Laurel is another option due to its naturally upright, compact growth habit.
