So happy to have chosen Cullen Nurseries to supply, plant and fertilize our new Red Robin hedge. Great customer service from Caitriona and really pleased with the very professional job Rob & his colleague did planting them. Pics don't do them justice - this was the day they were planted - 61 x 2l Red Robins - really healthy looking plants. Delighted and looking forward to seeing them grow over the years. Thank you!

  • Laurel hedge plants are Fast growing Hardy Evergreen Hedge with Large glossy green leaves and can potentially grow up to 2 foot 6 inches per year.
  • Evergreen hedges such as Photinia Red Robin, Portuguese Laurel hold their leaves and colour all year round.
  • Laurels are a very common choice for the Irish gardeners as it is Ideal for most soil types and locations.
  • They can withstand cold conditions in Winter months and still retain their colour and foilage.
  • They can be easily pruned in late summer or Autumn to create a neat hedge. Trimming a hedge actually encourages the growth of the hedge itself.
  • Laurel hedging can be sown as bare-root plants in Winter months from November through to March or from pots all year round.
  • It is ideal in the garden and a popular choice as it provides screening, privacy, shelter from the wind and also road noise. It is a popular choice in properties built along main roads for it’s noise-reduction qualities.
  • As with all newly planted hedges, the first year of planting is the slowest in relation to growth. Once the plants have bedded in, the growth rate will increase.
  • Laurels can be pruned in Autumn but care must be taken to check the hedge for nesting birds before cutting commences.
  • When pruning, it is best to leave the hedge of the first year or two of growth. Then, trim the sides of the hedge only. This will encourage business in the hedge. Once the optimum height has been reached, the top of the hedge can then be pruned and trimmed to give the ideal shape.
  • White flowers will appear on more mature plants over time.
  • We grow Mature Instant Laurel Hedging Plants in a variety of sizes, 4ft, 5ft, or 5-6ft plants, which are lifted and root balled in a biodegradable hessian and delivered nationwide to our customers.
  • These mature plants will give an instant mature hedge effect, offering security, privacy, and shelter for the garden or site.
  • As with all new hedges, the first year after planting tends to be the slowest and results in a smaller growth rate whilst the plants are rooting into the surroundings.

How and When to Plants Mature Instant Laurel Hedging Plants

  • We grow Mature Instant Laurel Hedging in our native nursery.
  • Plants are lifted and rootballed during the bare root season from November to March.
  • Root balling the plant ensures the plant is delivered with the whole root system intact ready for planting into the ground.
  • The root-balled plant is placed in a biodegradable hessian net and tied up.
  • The plant is then transported to the end user and customer.
  • Our mature laurel Hedging is approximately 80 to 90cms in width and can therefore be planted 2.5 or 3ft apart to provide an instant thick mature hedge.
  • We recommend planting these large bushy laurels hedging into a trench and backfilling with the soil. The trench will need to be about 12/18 inches deep to accommodate the root ball.
  • Laurel Hedging plants by nature need a lot of water and if root ball mature plants are planted in dry spells or late in Spring, they will need plenty of water in the first year after planting.

Mature Laurel Hedging is grown here in our native nursery and is available for lifting in the bare root season of November to March.
