I purchase box hedging today at Cullen nurseries. The plants were fantastic quality and very reasonably priced. I meet both Rob and Caitriona who could not have been more friendly and helpful. Rob had the plants loaded in my car by the time I came back out from paying for them. Thanks Rob!! Great customer service and great range of trees and hedging.

We bought the 200 native hedging pack and are very happy with them. Caitriona was really helpful answering the few questions we had regarding planting. Even after the tough summer the hedging is growing well.

Description

Hornbeam Hedging — Best Hedging for Wetter Areas

Description & Key Features

Hornbeam hedging (Carpinus betulus) is a robust, climate-adapted hedge ideal for Irish gardens — especially where the ground can be damp or heavy. It’s considered one of the best hedging for wetter areas because of its tolerance to moist soils and consistent performance in cooler, temperate conditions.

This native (or near-native) species offers:

  • Good height and density within a few years

  • A semi-deciduous habit: leaves emerge fresh green in spring, mature through summer, then turn golden-bronze in autumn (often retained into winter)

  • Strong response to trimming — it easily forms neat, dense walls of foliage

  • Suitability for exposed, shaded, or difficult sites

Hornbeam hedging, like Green Beech Hedging is hardy and low in maintenance, making it a dependable choice whether you’re establishing a boundary hedge, screening, or dividing garden zones.

Planting & Spacing Recommendations

To get your Hedge off to the best start:

  • Planting season: Best planted during dormancy (late autumn through early spring)

  • Spacing: Use about 3 plants per metre in a single row, or for quicker density, a staggered double row

  • Soil prep: Loosen subsoil, clear weeds and grass, and add compost or organic matter if soil is poor or compacted

  • Planting depth: Ensure the root collar sits level with the soil surface

  • Firming in: Gently firm soil around roots to remove air pockets (avoid overcompaction)

Aftercare & Maintenance

  • Watering: Keep newly planted hedges moist (especially during dry spells). Once established, Hornbeam tolerates moderate conditions.

  • Weed control: Keep the base clear of weeds and grass in the first couple of years to reduce competition. A bark mulch layer helps.

  • Pruning: Trim annually (often summer or late summer) to promote fullness and maintain shape — hard cuts are tolerated if needed.

  • Feeding: Light fertiliser applications (e.g. organic pellets) can support vigorous growth in poorer soils.

Why Choose Hornbeam for Wet Soils?

Many hedging plants struggle in waterlogged or heavy soils. Hornbeam is a choice that balances performance and resilience:

  • It tolerates higher moisture better than many alternatives

  • It holds structure and density without frequent thinning

  • Its semi-deciduous nature allows for good screening year-round

If your site is shaded, damp, or has clay or loam soils, Hornbeam hedging often outperforms other hedges.

Alder Trees would also suit a damper soil and location to further enhance your landscape.
