Cullen Nurseries is delighted to celebrate the official launch of ACORNS 11 (Accelerating the Creation Of Rural Nascent Start-Ups), a unique programme designed to support early-stage female entrepreneurs living in rural Ireland. Officially launched this summer by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon TD, ACORNS continues to inspire, mentor, and empower women to grow their businesses and strengthen local communities.
Since its foundation, ACORNS has supported over 550 women entrepreneurs nationwide, with outstanding results. Data from last year’s cycle showed a 54% increase in turnover among participants, the creation of new jobs, and stronger export activity across multiple sectors. Such impact has now been recognised internationally, with ACORNS chosen as Ireland’s national entry to the European Enterprise Promotion Awards in the category Investing in Entrepreneurial Skills. The programme will be showcased at the SME Assembly 2025 in Copenhagen, underlining its importance as a model for rural enterprise support across Europe.
For Cullen Nurseries, ACORNS holds special significance. Our Managing Director, Caitríona Cullen, took part in ACORNS 6 and later progressed to ACORNS Plus, which is tailored for past participants to continue developing their businesses. Caitríona credits the programme with providing invaluable peer support, confidence, and practical guidance at a critical stage in Cullen Nurseries’ growth journey.

Being part of ACORNS 6 and ACORNS Plus not only gave me confidence as a business owner but also connected me to a network of incredible female entrepreneurs who continue to inspire me today. It’s fantastic to see ACORNS now gaining recognition at European level—it deserves it.”
ACORNS 11 will run from October 2025 to April 2026, with up to 50 new places available. The programme is free to participants, thanks to funding from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine through the Rural Innovation and Development Fund, and the voluntary contribution of experienced Lead Entrepreneurs who guide each cycle.
